About Washington Dulles International Airport

Washington Dulles International Airport is the main airport of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan area, and serves most of the demand for international travel in that region. Located on the border of Loudon and Fairfax counties in Northern Virginia, Washington Dulles International Airport is run by MWAA, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and runs under the airport code IAD (International Airport Dulles). The airport is a hub for United and Jet Blue Airlines, and serves 60,000 passengers a day.

The airport is well known in architectural circles, as the main terminal dating from 1958, was designed by the famed Finnish architect Eero Saarinen. This terminal was expanded in the late ‘90s to accommodate larger numbers of travelers. In fact, Washington Dulles International Airport has several midfield terminals where the gates are actually located. Check-in and security screenings occur in the main terminal, and then passengers board shuttles to get to the other terminals to board their planes.

Due to the fact that the airport is located 26 miles from downtown Washington, DC, transport to Dulles has been by automobile only. However, the Washington Metro plans to extend train service to Dulles as soon as 2014 as part of the Silver Line, currently under construction.

The most famous incidents to have taken place at Dulles include the malfunction of two Concordes in a similar manner to that which led to the crash of a Concorde in Paris in the year 2000. The jet that was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon on September 11th departed from Washington Dulles International Airport.
