About Santa Barbara Municipal Airport
Santa Barbara Municipal Airport is located in Santa Barbara, California and run and owned by the city. Starting in 1914 and Santa Barbara played role as a base for Lockheed aircraft manufacturing. During the war, the airport played a significant role in the building of air defences. Today, Santa Barbara Municipal Airport now serves the Los Angeles area as an alternate airport with closer transit times being located on highway 101 and shorter lines than LAX. Approximately 750,000 passengers are served each year by the airport with 15,000 takeoffs and landings each month. Many major carriers fly into Santa Barbara including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Frontier, Horizon, United and US Airways. The airport has non-stop flights to Denver, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco and Seattle. The airport is also served by many flight schools. The airport has three runways, with Runway 7 facing west and runways 15L and 15R facing northwest and run parallel to each other. The airport previously operated a forth runway, however this was removed due to surrounding development in the area. Currently, a $60 Million new terminal is being developed to be able to handle higher traffic and to be much more efficient. The new terminal will more than triple the area of the current terminal building. The new terminal is planned to be completed in 2012 with operations moving in the summer of 2011. Santa Barbara Municipal Airport strives to be “a self-sustaining, exceed expectations for safety and quality service, and meet the air transportation and economic development needs of it’s customers and partners.”
