About Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport
Newport News Williamsburg International Airport will launch a new concourse and a new airline service. It’s a big step forward at a time when the airline industry is struggling because the economy still drags. Passengers will be able to fly non-stop to Denver with increased access to the West Coast via Frontier Airlines. It’s the first new airline in the area in more than eight years and the first sizable addition to a local airport in nearly two decades. The expansion is all part of an aggressive push forward under the airport’s energetic new executive director, Ken Spirito. Spirito, who at 37 is one of the youngest airport directors in the country, has led the development of the new $13.8 million concourse, which will provide service to thousands of new passengers. Spirito believes the expansion may lead to more than 150,000 additional passengers using the airport each year. The new concourse will be 33,800 square feet. It will feature state-of-the-art technology to make the airport more comfortable for passengers and more environmentally friendly. The new restrooms, for example, feature technology that automatically changes the plastic toilet seat covers. Executives for Frontier Airlines, which recently merged with Midwest Airlines, said they were excited by the opportunity presented at the airport, specifically the chance to get military and tourist passengers. “We do think this is a great market,” Daniel Shurz, vice president of Frontier Airlines, said in an interview with the Daily Press. “It’s better for us to choose smaller airports. … For us it’s finding the balance. This is the most cost-effective location with the most proactive management.” Four flights will be scheduled weekly to and from the airport on a 128-seat Airbus 318. The airline meticulously looked at other airports in the region before deciding on Newport News-Williamsburg International. More than a million passengers used the airport in 2009, and the airport was able to break roughly even on finances — a big triumph during a time of downturn. It’s also a large step up from 1994, when the airport attracted a meager 300,000. The airport first opened in 1949 to commercial flights with service from two airlines, Piedmont and Capitol Airlines.
