About Melbourne International Airport

Melbourne International Airport is located in Melbourne, Florida. Melbourne International Airport is a public airport that is operated using funds from the Melbourne municipal budget. As a result, the airport does not use any local tax dollars. The airport was founded in 1928 as a port for airmail service. During World War II, Melbourne International Airport served as a naval base and would eventually become a Surplus Property Airport. The airport was also featured in the movie Stranger Than Paradise. Today, the airport has service to several local areas. Delta Airlines and Atlantic Southeast Airlines provide non-stop service to Atlanta. US Airways and PSA Airlines provide non-stop service to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Occasionally Delta will provide flights to other cities as well, such as Cincinatti, New York-JFK, and New York-La Guardia. Direct Air provides service to Niagara Falls and Punta Gorda. Cargo carriers also provide flights from the airport, as Air Transport International provides service to Antigua. One interesting thing about the airport is that within the airport is an airport museum. Florida Institute of Technology has a flight school on site at the airport, called the F.I.T. Aviation Flight School. There is also the Pilot Training College which offers European flight training for fixed wing aircraft. There are three asphalt paved runways. While most of the traffic on the runways is general aviation, the airport can also serve scheduled commercial flights, air taxis, multi-engine planes, jet planes, helicopters, and military planes. Melbourne International Airport is a very versatile airport and is used daily for short flights and cargo transfer through Florida.
