About Little Rock National Airport (Adams Field)

Little Rock National Airport (Adams Field) is Arkansas’ largest commercial airport. It is located 3 miles east of Little Rock, the capital city of Arkansas. An airfield since 1917, Little Rock National Airport (Adams Field) was purchased by the City of Arkansas in 1930 and opened for commercial flights in 1931. It now services seven operators: American, Delta, United, American Eagle, Continental, Southwest, and the airport’s newest addition, Vision Airlines. Flights are available to eighteen cities within the US. The airport is governed and operated by the City of Little Rock Municipal Airport Commission. It has three runways, two of which are oriented 220 degrees (southwest) and one at 360 degrees (north). The airport’s current terminal was built in 1972 and boasts several coffee shops and restaurants, as well as free wireless internet. Parking is available in one of several outdoor lots or a multi-level garage. For those in need of assistance at Little Rock National Airport, a band of friendly, red-vested volunteers called the Airport Angels Squadron is available for help. The City of Little Rock has invested over $170 million into improvements for the airport since the 1990’s, with more to come. The Municipal Airport Commission plans on major improvements to the airport by 2020, as part of its Vision 2020 plan. The plan will ensure that improvements are made without increasing taxes or costs to either passengers or airlines. Tragedy struck Little Rock National Airport (Adams Field) in June 1999 when a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 operated by American Airlines crashed on landing, killing all ten passengers and the captain. Multiple factors, including inclement weather, were blamed for the crash.
