The Henry E. Rohlsen Airport is located in St. Croix, Christiansted in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It participates with American Airlines, Delta Airlines and US Airways for commercial airlines as well as Air Sunshine, American Eagle, Cape Air, Vieques Air Linc and Seaborne Airlines, Inc. for commuter airlines. At the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport is in the process of having its runway extended from 7,600 feet to 10,000. There are several benefits to this remodel, which began in 1997. This will now allow the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, including a Boeing 747, a larger amount of cargo and a greater amount of passengers. The airport is publicly owned but is run by IV Port Authority. The Henry E. Rohlsen airport is located in the southwestern portion of St. Croix near Protestant Cay and Beauregard Bay, it is just a short walk to many convenient beaches, but there are several taxi cap services available. However, if driving is more your style, the airport does offer rental car services through Avis, Budget and Hertz Rent-a-car. In January of 2010 American Airlines made an emergency landing after taking off from the airport, when it was discovered by the pilot that one of the engines was on fire. After two emergency attempts to shut down the engine and extinguish the fires, the pilot was forced to turn back and landed the plane a short eleven minutes later. All 44 passengers and 4 crew members were able to evacuate the plane safely, once it had touched down. There were no fatalities or reported injuries.
