About Gustavus Airport
Gustavus, Alaska, is unlike any other place on Earth. Gustavus, is a remote peninsula located t the northwest of Juneau, Alaska, and is only accessible by air or sea. This remote village is surrounded by Glacier Bay National Park, and has no accessible roads leading to or from the village. The airport of Gustavus, is actually owned by the state of Alaska, and operated by manager Michael Peddersen, but is open for public use with an average of 15 flights per day (mostly air taxies and personal aircraft). The airport is mainly serviced through charter flight conducted by Alaska Airlines, Air Excursions, and Wings of Alaska. Gustavus is often a favored landing spot for small aircraft that wish to divert their course from other islands that may have extreme winds or low visibility. In 1957, a National Gurad AC-120 carrying 6 passengers diverted their course from Annette Island to Gustavus, in order to avoid high winds and icy condition. Upon their decent into calmer conditions at Gustavus, the AC-130 wing clipped a pine tree in the hills of the higher elevation, and spiraled down to the floor below, ending the lives of all 6 passengers aboard. The accident could have been averted had the airport had a control tower or on site ground control, but Gustavus has neither of those necessary specialties, and is completely dependent upon the skill and prowess of the aircraft pilots. Runway 1, of only 2 total, has surface conditions being composed of asphalt and concrete, and allowing a capacity of 40,00 pounds for a single-wheeled aircraft, while runway 2 is composed of concrete and asphalt and can command a single wheel load of 60,000 pounds (or a dual wheel load of 100,00 pounds. The greatest thing about the Gustavus airport, however, is that it will transport you to a locality that will capture the essences of natural beauty. From the airport, there is an endless access to the natural surroundings, the amazing Glacier Bay National Park, whale watching excursions, bear watching adventures, and of course, an interesting and invaluable tour through native traditions and folklore.
