About Grand Canyon West Airport
Grand Canyon West Airport is 60 Miles from Peach Springs, Arizona. The closest Major City is Las Vegas, 120 Miles away. It has one paved asphalt runway. Grand Canyon West Airport is a public airport, now classified as a commercial airport as it carries over 10,000 people per year. The Airport is owned and operated by the Hualapai Indian Tribe, who use it to generate tourism within the Grand Canyon West area and it’s the main departure point for the areas plane and helicopter tours. The Airport’s manager is Laryel Tahbo, who is also a Hualapai Tribe member. Grand Canyon West Airport began as a commercial airport in 2005, as a project between The Hualapai and Las Vegas Businessman David Jin, due to the proposed opening of the Grand Canyon Skywalk in 2007. There are plans for new or expanded airport facilities, such as runway extensions, taxiways, aircraft parking aprons, hangars, lighting systems, navigational aids and ground access. This is in the hope that the airport will be able to expand the size of its runway and eventually to have a second runway. Grand Canyon West Airport is used by numerous local travel operators as well a the Hualapai themselves for their other tourism ventures. Since the airport opening it has done increasing business every year, they now accommodate almost 1000 people per day at the airport, most of whom are day trip passengers. Other cities near Grand Canyon West Airport are Henderson, Flagstaff and St. George, But Grand Canyon West is the closest to the Grand Canyon.
