About General Mitchell International Airport

General Mitchell International Airport (FAA code: MKE) is a county-owned airport located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin of the United States of America. It came into existence in 1926 as a result of Milwaukee County purchasing the land for an airport. The airport is located close to larger metropolitan North American cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, and Minneapolis. Several major airline companies serve General Mitchell International Airport. These companies include American Airlines, Air Canada, Continental, Delta, Southwest, United, and US Airways. Some of the major cities that the airport serves with non-stop flights include Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto. Travelers can also fly directly from General Mitchell International Airport to Cancun, Mexico if they desire a warm vacation and a break from the Wisconsin weather. General Mitchell International consists of five runways and in 2010, served close to ten million airplanes. As a result of an accident where a plane skidded off a runway, the airport is now expanding the runway safety area. The airport also has a unique military presence, as it plays host to the General Mitchell Air National Guard Station. There, you can find an air refueling wing and guards which are available for deployment in the case the Air Mobility Command requires support. The Milwaukee weather varies to the extreme. An example of this can be found by looking at weather records. The record high for the month of March was 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and the low was -10 degrees Fahrenheit. The low temperatures and the presence of snow in the winter months means that airport crews must be prepared for weather-related tasks such as de-icing planes and determining whether or not flights should be canceled. One last unique attribute that the airport has is the Mitchell Gallery of Flight, a museum for those with an interest in aviation. It is located inside the General Mitchell International Airport.
