About Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport has been my airport of choice for many years now, even when I lived closer to another. This airport is clean and efficient, it is not too complicated for anyone to get lost, and it is never overcrowded. It is an international airport so airlines from around the globe stop in. A lot of domestic airlines make stops here as well, but the main airline routes supported are for Spirit Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Jetblue Airways, Delta Airlines and US Airways. Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport is located as the name implies, between Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale. It is in sunny South Florida where the only weather issues are rain and hurricanes. Surrounding cities include Dania Beach, Davie, Cooper City, Plantation, Sunrise and Wilton Manors. These cities are very accessible as the airport is just off a major highway I-595. It is also a hub for Gulfstream jets and you could always see at least one FEDEX cargo plane as you pass by. Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport is one of the airports owned by Broward County, a political subdivision of the State of Florida. The Broward County Board of Commissioners operate and delegate the management and daily operations of the airport. It was opened in 1929 and was known then as the Merle Fogg Field after a World War I aviator moved to Ft. Lauderdale to start his flying business. Broward County assumed control in 1948 and they assumed ownership shortly after in 1953. Just as in the 1940s this airport still has 3 runways. As every other airport, improvement keep being made, the terminals are updated, more services offered, parking garages are constantly being built. Major accidents that occurred on the way to or from this airport were around 1972 to 1985 but even then there were only injuries, no deaths. More recently, the airport activity ceases if the weather is inclement either here or at a destination airport.
