About Valdosta Regional Airport

As a citizen of Valdosta, Georgia, I have used the Valdosta Regional Airport numerous times throughout my life. The airport is located on the extreme outskirts of town and can be kind of tricky to find if you do not know where to look. Valdosta Regional Airport is really nothing special, to put it in simple terms. It is a tiny airport and I am pretty sure that every flight that leaves there goes to Atlanta only. People in Valdosta that want to travel always have to take a flight from Valdosta Regional Airport to Atlanta before they can get where they need to go. I have found that it is actually cheaper to drive to Atlanta, which only takes about 3 ½ hours, and begin your air trip there. A flight from Valdosta to Atlanta will often add quite a bit of extra expenditures on your trip that you can minimize by driving and leaving your car in Atlanta. There is only one terminal at Valdosta Regional Airport and I think there is only one runway as well. The planes that commute from Valdosta to Atlanta are not very big, spacious, or luxurious at all. They are propeller planes that usually produce a turbulence filled, bumpy, 1 ½ flight to north Georgia. The weather at Valdosta Regional Airport varies from day to day, just like the moods of your flight attendants. Some days in South Georgia can be all clear skies and sunshine while others can be haunted by hard rains and vicious lightening. We are a very “weather oriented” little city here as there often are times when there is nothing else to talk about.

About Columbus Metropolitan Airport

Columbus Metropolitan Airport is actually a fairly new airport, all things considered. It has only been functioning like it is today for about 10 or 12 years and has since grown in many aspects. The Columbus Metropolitan Airport primarily serves the city of Columbus, Georgia which is right on the Georgia-Alabama border. Just outside the city of Columbus is the huge military base of Ft. Benning. This base is also in part why the Columbus Metropolitan Airport has grown so much in size over the past decade or so. The vast majority of the flights that come in and out of Columbus Metropolitan Airport are either headed to or coming from Atlanta. Just like many of the airport in southern Georgia, CMA serves as a hub between the smaller towns to Atlanta and beyond. The weather facing the CMA is often pleasant. It is not in an area where there is an abnormal amount of bad weather so a person could almost always count on a smoother flight. But just like any southern airport, they have their stormy summers, so a little turbulence is not unusual. The airport itself has several terminals, some of which have been recently added with the growth of the area. The few flights that do not go directly to Atlanta go to Birmingham or Montgomery, Alabama. CMA is an airport with an increasingly good reputation and in the future they are expected to expand in size and flight ranges, possibly becoming one of the larger airports in southern Georgia.

Certain airlines fly to these locations and offer non-stop flight options. City ordinances allow for flat taxi rates to and from the airport, offering ground transportation to airport clients. Although this airport is city-sanctioned, it has experienced several incidents in safety and flight experiences. In 1987 an Eastern Airlines plan burst a fuselage at Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport. On July six of 1996, an airplane experienced a faulty take off procedure and engine failure. Due to this accident, one of one hundred and forty eight passengers was injured, and two were killed.

Bradley International Airport (BDL) is located in the northern central portion of Connecticut, in the town of Windsor Locks. Bradley was designed for customer convenience and has many services and amenities for passengers. For an overnight stay, the Sheraton Bradley hotel is located at the airport, in walking distance from the gate. Many restaurant choices are available for passengers that want to grab a bite to eat, such as the Black Bear Restaurant and Lock’s Landing Restaurant, both are located in Terminal A, after the security check point. There is a Food Court also located after the security check point in Terminal A that features fast favorites such as Boston Pizza, Edy’s Ice Cream, Dunkin Donuts and McDonald’s and Bradley offers free Wi-Fi service as well. For those needing souvenirs or some reading material, there are a few gift shops located in Terminal A, after the security checkpoint, including a Brooks Brothers located in the Food Court, Cover 2 Cover and Sterling Works on Concourse E. For passengers with disabilities Bradley offers accommodations to make traveling easier. The passenger pick-up area is located on the lower level and the drop off area is on upper level, both accessible to the entrances. Bradley offers self service luggage cart rentals for $4.00, there is an elevator located in the central part of the south wall, directly across from United ticket counter. Wheelchairs can be reserved in advance through the ticket agents and for handicap accessibility on to an air craft, Bradley has a commuter carrier lift that is equipped to assist handicapped persons with boarding, this service also needs to be reserved in advance with ticket agents.

Meadow Field Airport (BFL) is a small airport located in Bakersfield, Southern California. It was established in 1920 and still operates today .The airport is owned by Kern County and provides flights to seven hundred thousand people in the surrounding area. There are two runways for planes, allowing for more incoming and out going flights and four gates numbered three, four, seven and nine. . Meadow Field provides domestic flights as well as international ones. Their available airlines are Allegiant Air, United Express, and US Airways Express. Meadow Filed encourages passengers to arrive seventy-five minutes before scheduled departure. While waiting, passengers can enjoy the wireless internet access or catch a bite at Blimpie located in William M. Thomas Termina. Meadow Field has available parking. Short Term parking (zero to thirty minutes) is free while hour-long parking is two dollars. A full day’s parking is eleven dollars while long-term parking—if one were to leave their car at the airport while on their trip—is nine dollars. There is also the option of renting a car. There is Avis, Hertz, National as well as Budget Car rentals. The rental booths are located inside the airport. Cabs are also available to call for transportation. Meadow Field plans on expanding and constructing new buildings in the future. There is also a plan to add a third runway. They will also be adding in another parking lot, allowing for more people to come to the airport. At Meadow Field, growth is expected in the next few years.

hoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is the primary airport not only for Phoenix, but for the entire state of Arizona. It is operated by the City of Phoenix. As an airport it is an enjoyable experience with seventeen different airlines serving three terminals. In a somewhat unusual setup these terminals are numbered 2, 3, and 4, terminal 1 was removed decades ago but the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport chose not to renumber the other terminals since its customers were already familiar with the setup. Terminal 4 is named for Senator Barry Goldwater and is (somewhat ironically) the only terminal set up for international flights. The airport is convenient to the major cities of the Phoenix Metro-plex, Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, and Glendale, Gilbert, Tempe and the like. About Merrill Field

Merrill Field Commercial Airport can boast about the fact that it was the first real airport in Anchorage when it was established in the year 1930. It was thus named after a pioneer within the aviation field, Russell Merrill, who disappeared mysteriously during a flight 1929. The only evidence of his presence that was ever found was a scrap of fabric which was subsequently identified as cloth from the tail of the plane that Merrill had been flying. Since its establishment, new construction has been added to better the airport, such as the decommission of the Lake Hood Tower (the original air traffic control tower) and the building of its predecessor, the Anchorage Tower in 1976, a construction that stands 165 feet tall and can withstand the power of a 8.5 earthquake. Merrill Field did not let the old tower’s services be forgotten however. After the Lake Hood Tower was dismantled, the tower cab was put on display in the Alaska Transportation Museum where it stands as a proud veteran of aviation history. Merrill Field is located approximately one mile east of Anchorage. A part of Merrill Fields mission is to be a good neighbor within its community, and thus they provide “Fly Friendly” Noise Reduction Guidelines to aviators utilizing the airport. The airport provides many services for the commercial aviation industry such as aircraft rentals and sales, avionics, flight instruction, hangars, pilot supplies and maintenance, to name a few. Merrill Field provides three runways, ranging from 2000 to 4000 feet long for its visiting aircrafts; the landing aircrafts cannot exceed 12,500 pounds due to the fact that Merrill Field is a General Aviation Airport. Merrill Field has proudly ranked as one of the busiest airports in the nation for years, ranking the 72nd busiest airport in 2009 with some 165,000 flight operations and approximately 630,000 gallons of fuel pumped that year. A total of 877 aircraft are based out of Merrill Fields out of a statewide total of 10,891 registered aircraft. One of the few severe weather troubles that Merrill Field does encounter during the years is the legendary, heavy Alaskan snowfall. While delaying and frustration, snow removal is just another aspect of their operations and Merrill Field provides careful guidelines on how to remove and store snow on the runways and around the hangars to minimize the chance of any accidents. In September of 2010, Merrill Fields announced some improvements to the airport such as new paved runways with extended safety areas and new taxiway paving. It is clear that Merrill field is a “little big” airport full of rich history and love of aviation.

The airport is in the UTC-9 (DST-8) time zone. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) refers to the airport using the CDV airport code. When referring to the airport, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) uses the PAVC airport code and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) uses the CDV code just like IATA. By August 2007, Merle K. (Mudhole) Smith Airport had many aircraft operations and these were usually about thirty eight flights each day. Kodiak Airport is a small publicly owned commercial and military airport located about 4 miles Southwest of Kodiak, Alaska in Kodiak Island County, Alaska. It is owned and operated by the state of Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF). It has three runways: 1) runway 07/25 7542 x 150 feet 2) runway 11/29 5399 x 150 feet 3) runway 18/36 5013 x 150 feet. The airport is located over 300 miles from Anchorage, Alaska on Kodiak Island which is a large group of islands 30 miles from Alaska Peninsula in the Gulf of Alaska. Kodiak Airport was formally called Naval Air Station Kodiak in 1941. in 1947 the U.S. Coast Guard ran the airport. Finally in 1971 the U.S. Navy turned the airport over to the State of Alaska in 1971. The major airline carrier serving Kodiak Airport is Alaska Airlines which flies mostly to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. There has been 4 accidents that departed from Kodiak Airport since 1947. In 1987 a Beechcraft 1900C crashed and killed 18 people. In 1961 a US Navy Martin P-5B Marlin crashed and killed 10 people, and in 1947 a Consolidated PBY-5a Catalina crashed and killed 18 people. Kodiak’s climate is called subpolar oceanic with the January low at an average of F – 4.06 Celsius or 24.7 F and the August average high is 16.61 Celsius and 61.9 F. Snow falls during the months of December through March every year.

Fairbanks International Airport began as an airfield called Weeks Ball Park in 1923, and became a part of history when Alaskan Airlines was founded after Carl Eielson flew into Fairbanks to land there. The site of the original air field is now a residential area, although the airport is still in the city of Fairbanks and has expanded considerably due to increasing travel to Alaska. Many international flights leaving the United States stop at Fairbanks International Airport before departing for Seoul or Tokyo. Alaska Airlines, Era Alaska, BP, Delta, and Frontier Airlines regularly land at the airport domestically while Air North, Condor, and Japan Airlines are available for international travel. The airport is equipped with two cafes, and with access to internet and ATMs. Fairbanks International Airport is publicly owned by the State of Alaska International Airport System. The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities currently maintains the airport. It sits at an elevation of 439 feet. Due to the unique climate of Fairbanks snow and ice a consideration, as well as snow removal equipment which is necessary to keep the runways clear. Frost heaves may also be of concern. The airport has two asphalt runways, one gravel runway, and one water runway which is capable of landing seaplanes. Access to the gravel runway is limited to the Summer months. Fairbanks International Airport expanded in 1990 to include Lufthansa Cargo. The airport has expanded terminals, and shuttle or taxi services to accommodate travelers who wish to visit the Fairbanks area.
