Bellingham International Airport was originally created in 1936, but had Temporary Port of Entry status. However, in 1940, when United States Army Corps of Engineers took over, they expanded it to three runways and added many necessities, such as, revetments for parking the airplanes/aircrafts. Now though, the only runway that is used is the longest runway, as the other two have decayed and is now longer safe. Although, there are still four airlines that land at this airport and they are, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Airlines, Horizon Air, and San Juan Airlines. It is also interesting to know that Bellingham International Airport is a civil airport, meaning Whatcom County owns Bellingham International Airport. Now, as for Whatcom County, the geography of it is quite unique, the total mass of Bellingham is 31.7 square miles, 25.6 of that is land and the 6.1 is water. Not to mention, the airport is also near Mount Baker, with a peak elevation of 10,778 feet, making this the largest volcano in its area. Another interesting fact on this airport is that, on average, it rains for roughly six to eight months throughout the year. However, in the summer, it is quite dry and it rains less than six days in July and August, combined! Also, since the airport’s closeness to neighbor Canada, it is a convenient trafficking area, such as the incident in 2007, where a women was caught trying to courier more than three kilograms or in 1994, where a chauffeur was arrested for picking a package of Percocet’s.
