About Aniak Airport
Aniak Airport is a single runway airport and seaplane landing in Aniak, Alaska. The airport is located at the head of Aniak Slough, on the banks of the Kuskokwim River. Aniak Aiport’s asphalt runway is oriented at 100 degrees (ESE and is 6000 feet long by 150 feet wide. Aniak Airport was originally constructed in 1939, during World War 2, in order to provide support to Russia. The airport has made Aniak into something of a regional hub, and it enables supply delivery year round as compared to the summer-only barges. It serves two airlines, Era Alaska and PenAir. Era flys to Anchorage, as well as the more isolated communities of Chuathbaluk, Holy Cross, Kalskag, St. Mary’s and Shageluk. PenAir has service to Anchorage. The airport is only a five minute drive from the city of Aniak, population 485. It is owned by the State of Alaska. The FAA’s records indicate that nineteen aircraft are hosted by Aniak Airport and that the airport is closed to any aircraft with more than 30 passengers or any flights that require passenger screening. In 2000, a flight due to land at Aniak Airport crashed 60 miles southeast of the airport, killing the pilot. The National Transportation Safety Board ruled that the pilot made a critical error by deciding to attempt a night flight in dangerous weather conditions. More recently, a 2008 passenger flight crashed, but miraculously, no one aboard was seriously injured. HNI airport is open to the public since 1947. Managed by Terry Hoffman this Alascon airport helps the local community stay in touch with the outside world. Covering 1700 acres there is one runway and additionally one seaplane landing area. The airport is owned by the state of Alaska and located on the cook swim the river. The airport serves such destinations as Anchorage holy cross St. Mary’s and Kalskag. There are many small publicly owned airports in Alaska that help the communities in these remote outposts stay connected with supplies to the rest of the world. These are very important lifelines for the local community that enable them to enjoy a modern life while remaining in a geographically isolated location. This airport with its two runways one built the asphalt and another built on water is a great example of such a unique environment that allows people to live in remote territory.
