About Yakima Air Terminal (McAllister Field)

The Yakima Air Terminal (McAllister Field) sits just to the south of downtown Yakima, Washington. The airport was founded in 1926, but the first few years the airport was largely just an air strip where airplanes landed in a field of scrub and grass. The airport was officially dedicated two years later in 1928, but still did not have a paved runway for years. Over time the airport built two runways, the large runway is approximately 7,600 feet long and the smaller runway is about 4,000 feet long. During World War 2 the United States Army Air Force utilized the airport as a transport and storage terminal to help with the war effort. By 1974 the Yakima Air Terminal (McAllister Field) had made significant improvements and a modern control tower was operational. The airport is owned by the City of Yakima, however it is not taxpayer funded. All expenses to operate and maintain the airport are generated from airport revenue. The main air provider at the Yakima Air Terminal (McAllister Field) is Horizon Air, with flights to Canada, Mexico, Hawaii and other U.S. destinations. There are smaller operators as well, such as Xtra Airways and Sun Country Airlines. These smaller air carriers provide travel to and from Nevada. Beyond these air carriers, the airport has a high volume of general aviation from private air travel in Washington State. Also, the United States Armed Forces will still use the Yakima Air Terminal (McAllister Field) from time to time as needed, continuing the tradition from World War 2 in which the airport has a relationship with the military. The overall size of the Yakima Air Terminal is substantially smaller than most of the well-known airports in the United States. The total size of the airport is only 825 acres. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identifier symbol for the Yakima Air Terminal is YKM. The YKM symbol is also used by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for their designation of the airport. The airport has been in constant use (either civilian or military, or both) for over 80 years.
