Rock Springs, Sweetwater County Airport is located in Rock Springs, Wyoming. The airport is located in a handy location near both Rock Springs and Sweetwater. The Rock Springs, Sweetwater County Airport is administered, since 1969, by a board consisting of five members; each of these have a different role and they meet weekly to ensure the smooth running of the airport. The facility was originally founded in 1942 as the Rock Springs Airport but, after 1969, there was an agreement with Sweetwater and the airport as renamed Rock Springs, Sweetwater County Airport. One of the most famous incidents in the history of the airport is the landing there of Amelia Earhart in 1932 in an auto-gyro while on a publicity tour of the area!! Originally Rock Springs, Sweetwater County Airport had two runways, one going east-west and one north-south. Later there was a third runway added to these and, around the same time, lights were added to the runways to allow night flights to land. Later the original two runways were closed and another was built in their place. At the same time a number of taxi-ways and a service apron were built, as well as a passenger and a general aviation terminal. Within the passenger terminal the excellent Aviator Bistro is now open from 6:30 until 3:00, although these hours will be extended in the coming weeks. The addition of this facility has made Rock Springs, Sweetwater County Airport an even more appealing airport for your aviation needs.
